Vintage postcards become lavender bags, vintage fabrics are used to create hat stands, lace and embroidered hankies become buntingand doilies are transformed into cushions. There are also small vintage collage pieces, bags from tea towels and quilts from vintage tablecloths... I'm pretty certain that reusing and recycling handmade goods will make a home a happier place!
Personalised commissions welcome.

www.handmadeandvintage.co.uk

Barry Falk

Each city has its ghost town and it is particularly noticeable these days how many derelict buildings and empty shops there are. These are haunted places; metaphors of loss and abandonment. They are suffused with a disturbed sense of self, what Freud referred to as the unheimliche: something familiar which has become alienated through the process of repression. They are also analogous to a fragile sense of self. My photographs of ransacked rooms, graffitied walls, scattered detritus, peeling paint, bare brick, boarded exteriors, crumbling interiors and liver-spotted walls can all be read as inner disturbances – an internal landscape reflected in the abandoned urban environment. When entering these places we stand at the threshold where the self is exposed and begins to dissolve. There is a realisation that these abandoned structures are awaiting demolition, on the verge of a seismic upheaval and imminent collapse.

www.flickr.com/photos/51241173@N03

Sarah Harwin

harwin.family@virgin.net

Caroline Marie Higgs

I aim to capture what is on the periphery of visual perception and on the edge of our consciousness, often banal visions or subjects, taking the qualities and distortions generated by the interplay of light and object, and translate these fragments into densely layered paintings, concentrating on the interpretation of shadows, silhouettes, and reflections. The resulting images oscillate or occupy a space between figuration and abstraction, imbuing these ephemeral fragments with a subtle sculptural solidity and presence and thus objectifying light and arresting transitory moments in form.

Using traditional tools and methods in painting, drawing, and photography, she is exploring temporal and spatial perception in relation to memory whilst attempting to unravel relationships between the peripheral, banal and the uncanny.

www.carolinemariehiggs.com

Kim Hollands

Being interested in the human form, I have focused on one aspect of the human body, in this case hair, to create a series of drawings using pencil and graphite. Combining her interest in maps and British wildlife, Amy makes illustrative images out of paper. Every piece is painstakingly put together, first drawn then cut with a scalpel. As each sliver of paper is cut out it reveals another colour beneath. Maps are often incorporated in the work, contextualising the subject matter geographically.

www.amyhope.co.uk

Rosie Irvine

www.rosieirvine.com

Amanda Moss

Dip. This collection of photographs is from a larger body of work that addresses beauty and atrophy in cut flowers. Photographing floral specimens when they are in their late stages and isolating them against a luminous background, Ted aims to reveal the individual character of each flower with a sense of intimacy. The size and scale of the prints play an important role in dialogue between subject and viewer. These are portraits of flowers that have become familiar to the photographer and whilst their aura may have become humble and their poise slightly withered, they sustain and emit a silent and dignified demeanor. Ted Davis was born in Toronto Canada and now lives in Hove where he owns and operates a photographic portrait studio.

www.studio323.co.uk

List of Artists for the September 2010 Exhibition.

Zoe Bailey
Sue Barnes
Sue Blandford
Janet Brooke
Ted Davis
Amy Douglas
Patrick Edgeley
Gary Eastwood
Sally Elford
Rowena Gilbert
Sarah Jones
Victoria Langdon
Sin Mui Chong Martin
Mary Moox
Nick Patchitt
Eve Poland
Flo Snook
Anna Tilson
Liz Toole
Ed Tucker
Rory Walker
Paul Walsh

Zoe Bailey

<img style="float:right; The clay vessel is my bold canvas; strong, simple and unfussy in form. Layers of clay echo periods of time, memories; slow, controlled, ordered. The surface evokes moods, tensions, actions, reactions.

Using additions of metal oxides for the reds, blacks and blues, the coloured clay layers are brushed on the slip cast vessel or inlaid in incised lines and marks. The surface marks are created using various sgraffito tools when the clay vessel is in a leather-hard state. Rowena bisque fires, then masks areas on the outside of the vessel using wax resist, glazing the inside and the unmasked areas with a transparent gloss with the final firing at 1160°C. All pieces are hand made and have Rowena's signature mark on the base.

www.rowenagilbert.com

Stella Harding

I live in one of the largest cosmopolitan cities in the world, a place where sometimes the natural world is oddly juxtaposed against the cultural. It is this cross-fertilisation of culture and nature from which I draw inspiration and seek to reflect in the work.
I am excited by the life and energy in natural materials but seek to transform and defamiliarise them in different ways. I use painting, mark-making, stencilling, scratching and sanding to add surface texture and pattern whilst retaining many of the characteristic signs of movement and growth. Stencilling and spray painting is both a reference to the tradition of mark-making on wicker basketry and a way of connecting with the myriad forms of textual expression which are written onto the fabric of the urban landscape.
I prefer using materials that I have grown or collected myself, yet having only a small garden forces me to consider ways of making the most of limited supplies of materials as well as wider issues of sustainability, economy and waste. I often re-work finished pieces or recycle elements that have had a previous life.
I enjoy working on a large scale with open, linear, abstract forms. Having learned recently that several of my pieces are based on the spatial geometry of hyperbolic paraboloids I am keen to learn more about the relationship between basketry and mathematics as a means of experimenting with form and space.
I welcome commissions and requests to run workshops.

www.basketryplus.org/StellaHarding/gallery.html

Sylvie Howitt

Wood, Water and Energy...a simple recipe that for thousands of years has given inspiration and life to artists and writers work around the world... Paper!
I love paper, all kinds of paper! especially paper from a different era with its unique texture, colour and smell.
With a chance discovery of a collection of vintage maps in a dusty attic, my imagination was fired by a mixture of works from Victorian woodcuts to Hans Christian Andersen and my current favourite artist Rob Ryan.
Papercutting as an art form has existed for thousands of years, during which people have been cutting paper, transforming it into art as unique and diverse as their culture, from simple folk art, to elaborate mathematical masterpieces.
For me, the use of recycled vintage materials seemed the perfect way to express a simple story of hope and love, with a material from a golden age of adventure, romance and hope.
I hand cut paper from my own freehand drawings. I love the physical process of cutting into paper with a sharp blade, sometimes scissors, releasing that one off image and design as a result.
There is something very appealing about the immediacy of this medium and the challenge of keeping the entire delicate image intact within the frame of the paper without the whole piece falling apart.
I love the symmetry of the designs and the way it tells a story. You will find that my designs vary from the contemporary to the traditional folky look depending on my mood and inspiration.
The paper I use has its own story, sometimes adding meaning to my paper cut and therefore bringing life into it.
Whether it is the colours, the musical notes, the maps or the place names, I hope there can be something to trigger a connection, joy, memories ...

www.sylviehowitt.com

Ed Tucker

I am a freelance illustrator based in sunny Brighton in England. Overarching themes in my work are East Anglian barns. Often overlooked, the ramshackle barns evidence the passage of time in their unkempt and ravaged appearance. I attempted to re-evaluate and recreate their importance by juxtaposing line and colour into intricate patterns and shapes.

The starting point is always based in observed reality. Layering is used as a technique to make images more complex, allowing viewers a richer visual experience. Line is an important part of the paintings or prints, offering the means of conveying movement, shifting view points and the mutability of the source material. It is then segmented, deconstructed and manipulated, finally being rebuilt as enigmatic and individual narratives. The bright, multicoloured images that formed my reconstructed barns a couple of years ago now are complemented by complex linear decisions or as different colour choices. Each new painting seems to suggest the possibility of further exploration and development.

The study of my environment and travelling around East Anglia looking for such barns is quite an adventure. I feel I am recording a part of local history for future generations. It is impossible to say how many of these may exist in a few years. Judging by their resilience in the past, they may be around for a while. However two of the barns are now residential properties and one is a tennis court.

www.debbieaylesartist.co.uk

Lulu Allison

I work in direct response to the site, with newsprint and other found printed paper which is essentially a waste material. By cutting holes into it, it may become in some way valuable again. The technique is incredibly simple, all children know about folding and cutting snow flakes and this easy technique combined with a poor material in some ways could create a valueless result. It doesn't even last so can't be bought or sold. But we value things in interesting ways and the fact that I have bothered to make it, and I am called an artist may be one of them. Of course, "value" is a subjective quantity and for some, it will only be a cheap material and an easy technique.

Another aspect is that of mould or fungus, a thing that is poor or ignored but often has great beauty. Somewhere between the invasion of a mould and the architecture of the space is where I try to place my work.

www.luckylulu.co.uk

Sue Blandford

I am interested in poetic juxtapositions of objects, which are imbued with both their practical uses and their symbolic evocation. The magic in the seemingly mundane or everyday.

I am concerned with paradoxes of light and dark, peace and unease. Also relationships between man made objects or interventions in natural situations.

I never go anywhere without a camera looking for photographs in their own right but mainly for material for paintings. Objects in context but slightly out of place. I am interested in what happens in the golden 30 minutes in the evening when the light is low and transformative giving glimpses of something other. When objects glow out of dark spaces or as with glasshouses, become beacons filled with mystery and seemingly inner light.

My work is a visual diary of observations that chime with internal states or life phases.

www.sueblandford.com

Sin Mui Chong-Martin

Most of my work is an observational and a personal interpretation of the intricate ways nature interrelates and informs humanity. My association with plant culture holds an enquiry into this interrelationship. This practice engages me with the process of looking, selecting, collecting and recording, which is translated into 'specimens' like drawings.
Apart from using pencils, my drawings are achieved through layers of colouring with colour pencils. Some are cut out by hand and presented in boxed frames.
My studies aim to reflect aspects of the human practice and desires with the use of plants as multi-demensional representations. The reference point for my practice is a construct of nature-society relationship where I exploit plants as cultural symbols fostered to suit our milieu.

www.axisweb.org/artist/sinmuichongmartin

Gary Eastwood

Gary Eastwood is travel and landscape photographer. Gary is a former UK Landscape Photographer of the Year, and is currently working on a photographic book, entitled Panoramic Sussex, which is due out later this year.

www.garyeastwood.co.uk

Sally Elford

Sally is an established Brighton based illustrator and print maker with a passion for mid-century design and pattern. An MA in Sequential Design and Illustration followed at Brighton University and in 2004 I joined Eastwing illustration agency and began working in editorial illustration. Recently, between commissions, I have been making screen prints. These are influenced by printed ephemera, children’s illustrations from the 60’s and 70’s, political posters, folk art and outsider art. The subject of my most recent set of prints is the honeybee. The much-publicised disappearance of the honeybee prompted me to take a closer look at the insect itself. The co-dependent, hard working creatures, their symbolism of industry, and their ancient connection to the spirit world, as well as the mysterious phenomenon of their puzzling vanishing, equally fascinate me.

Previously I have made prints of urban birds, particularly the pigeon. I print images of pigeons with mutated appearance, which are also the birds with the most characterful expressions. For me the pigeons symbolise the city itself. I am overall interested in studying things that exist in the corners of our perception such as the pigeon or the honeybee.

"Our treasure lies in the beehive of our knowledge. We are perpetually on the way thither, being by nature winged insects and honey gatherers of the mind."
Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), German philosopher.
The Genealogy of Morals, "Preface," sct. 1 (1887; tr. 1956).

Vicky.langdon@gmail.com
www.dewolfprints.com
plushpatterns.blogspot.com

Alison Swan

I hand-build solitary or grouped sculptural objects and vessels which act as metaphors for emotional and physical states as well as interpersonal relationships. I am fascinated by antiques and collectibles, discarded and found items with a patina of age and wear. The worn, scarred or damaged surfaces of such objects bear testament to their use and give rise to imagined histories. Figurative details are taken from religious figurines, the human body as well as a range of ornamental surfaces. These are then transferred as delicate 3D relief back onto the wheel thrown vessel walls, appearing to push through the surface of the vessels with a sense of animation and metamorphosis. The textures and forms are evocative and the viewer will create their own narrative, depending on personal memory and imagination.

www.anjalubach.com

Alexandra Dipple

Alexandra’s work describes an ongoing fascination with the written/printed word. Newspapers are the starting point and she has been working on two distinct bodies of work; one using full stops and dots and the other utilising dashes and hyphens. This was influenced by my interest in maps and aerial photography and looking at things from a different perspective. I hope to show within the limits of non-objective painting the shape of the environment as it changes, as it diminishes in one direction, grows in another. Non- objective artwork is an exercise in geometric abstraction, space related to shape. Painting has gradually taken over and I now work very freely in watercolour, with the minimum of compositional drawing; this gives the paintings an unpremeditated look, which attempts to express the beautiful but transitory nature of the still life and natural history subjects.

www.kateosborneart.com

Lucy Jefferys

Lucy Jefferys is a local stencil artist who produces multilayer, spray-painted artwork on canvas and other surfaces as well as wall murals. Graduating from the University of Brighton in 2003 with a degree in sculpture, she continued to work in conceptual installation until discovering a talent and love for painting. Focusing primarily on depictions of urban architecture, her painting has developed into a highly detailed, representational style that still retains painterly qualities.

“Architecture stands as an artificial construct in the natural landscape and yet, like the human beings that build and inhabit the structures, they suffer at the passing of time, decaying and withering, the wear and tear a record of the lives and movement occurring in and around it, an archive of events told in erosion, oxidisation and rot.
There are no figures in my paintings but the absent hand of many can be seen through the very existence of the structures and the character they have developed. There is a sense of solitude but with serenity rather than loss. I also hope to create a sense of movement but only on the part of the viewer, the still structures inviting passage physically or from one state of mind to another.

I’m currently working on a new series of paintings exploring the idea of levels of reality, fictions and narrative.”

Natalie first exhibited her paintings at the Brighton Art Fair in 2007 and has expanded her portfolio by painting full-time since then. She has had work accepted by The Bath Society of Artists, The Society of Women Artists, The London Group and The Royal Academy.

www.nataliemartin.co.uk
info@nataliemartin.co.uk

Nicholas Wriglesworth

Nicholas studied at the Slade in London. My distinct approach to Street Photography takes as its subject the contemporary cityscape – its centre and its margins. My image-making in locations including Tokyo, Budapest, New York and San Francisco doesn’t concern itself with representing those cities individually or specifically but instead searches for what is resonant yet unseen within them.

In a sense there are definite echoes of Painting in my approach to Photography and I am inspired by the purity of Barnett Newman, the geometry of Callum Innes and the bold, flat colours of the Scottish Colourists. I aim to create photographs that assert a heightened visual presence.

My images scrutinise tensions and divisions within dynamic and definite compositional relationships.
